Lemmons Contemporary is pleased to present the work of Eric Blum. This will be his first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Eric Blum’s work is rooted in moments of discovery and transformation. Working with the labor- intensive materials of wax and resin, Blum’s encaustics are the realization of the intensive process of questioning. The initial layers are continuously subtracted, revealed or revised by successive layers. The result can be seen as a topographical survey of the play between inspiration and doubt.

While Blum’s chosen method may seem deliberate, its sense of gradual unfolding instead allows for a certain flexibility. Above all, Blum values an open-ended ambiguity, a quality that invites many personal readings, offering glimpses of landscapes, constellations, and pure optical phenomena. The sense of weightlessness and airiness of the imagery, coupled with the smooth sheen of their surfaces, is contrasted with their physical heft and solidity as objects. In this respect, Blum’s work emanates an elusive quality, blurring the boundaries between material substance and creative energy.
Born in Fresno, California, Eric Blum studied at University of California in Los Angeles and Saint Martin's School of Art in London. Mr. Blum has exhibited widely and his work was featured at the Knoxville Art Museum, Knoxville, Tennessee and the Montclair Art Museum, in New Jersey. He currently resides in New York.
